In Charlotte, Con-way Freight Memorializes its Safest Drivers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Aug. 19, 2013 — Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), unveiled a commemorative wall of Distinguished Drivers at their Charlotte, N.C., service center in honor of the 41 professional drivers who have driven 1 and 2 million miles without a single incident.

The impetus behind the “Honor Wall” came from the fact that three Con-way Freight professional drivers based out of the Charlotte service center reached 2 million accident-free miles during 2013 — the most ever to reach that milestone in one year. These Distinguished Drivers joined the ranks of the 39 drivers who preceded them and were also lauded at today’s special ceremony.

Over the past 30 years, Con-way Freight has recognized 1,693 Distinguished Drivers across the country who have achieved 1 million safe driving miles, 204 who have reached 2 million miles of safe driving and one driver who, in February of this year, surpassed the 3-million-mile mark without an accident.

At the Charlotte service center, the 41 drivers to be recognized have safely travelled more than 50 million miles. As a point of reference, a stock car would have to circle the Charlotte Motor Speedway over 33 million times — all without causing a yellow flag (signifying a caution on the track due to an accident).

“I offer my sincere congratulations to the Con-way Freight drivers who have shown their skill and commitment to professionalism by reaching these milestones,” said Mayor Patsy Kinsey. “Con-way is a model neighbor in Charlotte, and it is a point of pride for our city that their drivers are setting the standard in safety as they travel our streets every day.”

Safety is Con-way’s number one core value and is the top priority of every one of Con-way Freight’s 15,000 drivers. “Our values statement, ‘Safety is non-negotiable,’ spells out our approach to safety very succinctly,” stated Tom Clark, Con-way’s senior vice president of operations. “Every time our employees and customers walk by the wall honoring our Distinguished Drivers, they will know that our commitment to safety is not a slogan. It’s who we are. They will also see that the wall has room for 61 name plates — 20 more Distinguished Drivers to go. Then we’ll build another wall.”
