Saving lives at Freight Safety Day - September 10th 2009

JOC Staff |
It is impossible to underestimate the importance of safety in the freight logistics industry. Road tolls and hazardous driving are pressing issues that must be addressed. Freight Safety Day will examine these issues and highlight who is leading the way in road safety, and outline actions that can be implemented to improve the safety bottom line.

A series of presentations, showcases and panel sessions will allow visitors to explore the current safety issues surrounding road safety. Specifically, attendees will have access to diverse expert opinion regarding safer vehicles, roads, drivers and fatigue management, drugs and alcohol management, as will as issues of safer communities.

Highlights of the Program Schedule includes a presentation by Ken Lay, Deputy Commissioner, Victoria Police. He will present an in-depth analysis about road safety by referring to Victoria's road incident statistics. Ken is committed to welcoming new technologies that might improve safety for all drivers:

'Freight Week's Safety Day is a unique way to highlight the issues and developments in truck and car technology. The facts of road trauma are deadly serious. Last year, 303 people died on Victorian roads, and 179 have already lost their lives this year. That's why I'm intrigued by the latest technology and advancements in vehicle safety. There is no doubt that emerging vehicle technology, along with robust police enforcement, will help police drive the road toll down in years to come, says Ken.

Tony Sheldon, TWU National Secretary will discuss the ongoing 'Safe Rates' campaign, including evidence of how rates of pay can directly impact road safety. This issue is extremely pertinent and has certainly been receiving much media attention.

Visitors can also attend an inspiring session lead by Dr Jeff Potter, Safety Manager of the National Transport Commission. Jeff will discuss who is setting the best example in road safety around the world, and encourage freight industry leaders to follow suit.

For fleet managers, the showcasing of the Guide to Safer Workplace Driving will be particularly relevant. This will be an invaluable resource that fleet managers can aspire to.

Interesting afternoon panel sessions will be chaired by:
Carlo Beltrame, General Manager Trucks, Mercedes
