Russian Railways to buy 200 electric locomotives produced by Alstom
Today at the V International Rail Business Forum 1520 Strategic Partnership in Sochi, Russian Railways <http://eu.vocuspr.com/Url.aspx?522698x462466x132972> and Transmashholding signed a contract for the supply of 200 new-generation EP20 dual-system passenger locomotives for Russian Railways in 2012-2020. The contract was signed by Russian Railways President Vladimir Yakunin <http://eu.vocuspr.com/Url.aspx?522698x462465x596667> and Transmashholding board chairman Andrei Bokarev.
The locomotive is being developed by a joint engineering company created by Transmashholding and the French firm Alstom Transport under a strategic partnership agreement signed at the start of 2009. The construction of the new locomotive involves highly advanced and promising technology. The locomotives will be produced at the Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant.
The first EP20 models will be released in 2011, after which they will undergo the full cycle of testing and state certification. In 2012-2013, the first 36 locomotives will be handed over to Russian Railways and used for passenger services on the Moscow - Sochi route, including during the Olympic Winter Games.
The EP20 is the first Russian locomotive capable of driving a passenger train at speeds of up to 200 km/h. The locomotive will be equipped with an asynchronous traction drive using IGBT transistors. This technology will enable the volume of technical servicing work to be reduced by several times, while increasing the travel distance between overhauls, and improving energy efficiency.
