U.S. diesel prices rose 3.6 cents in the week of July 22, the third straight week of increase, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. During the past three weeks, rates jumped 2 percent or 8.6 cents.

The average revenue per intermodal load rose 10 percent year-over-year in June 2013, more than double the increases seen in the previous four months, according to the Intermodal Association of North America. The yield amounted to $2,816 per intermodal shipment, up from $2,557 in June 2012.

The composite index of U.S. intermodal rates for the week of July 15 rose $20 from the week before, a result of increases in all directional indices, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The index climbed 1 percent to $2,019 in the week of July 15.

Genesee & Wyoming, a major owner of short line and regional railroads in North America with significant operations in Australia as well, continued to experience year-over-year growth in June, although at a diminished rate compared to previous months. Its 2013 numbers, when compared to 2012, show extremely large increases because of its acquisition of RailAmerica. However, June 2013’s volume still stands higher than the combined total of G&W and RailAmerica’s separate numbers for June 2012.

North American intermodal volume increased 1.8 percent year-over-year in the week ending July 6, after breaking the recent upward trend and falling 1.4 percent last week, according to the Association of American Railroads. Prior to last week, North American intermodal volume had been up for 12 weeks straight.

The number of 40-foot containers available for export in Chicago in the week of July 10 was below zero for the fifth consecutive week, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly Ocean Shipping Container Availability Report. Carrier data used in the report indicates 1,073 40-foot containers will be needed this week but are not available at this location, the largest deficit since the USDA began reporting container availability exactly one year ago.
