U.S. cross-border traffic with Canada via truck and rail declined 2.1 percent from $39.2 billion in June 2012 to $38.4 billion this June, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The value of imports by rail from Canada was the only of these types of surface trade to see a slight increase year-over-year.

U.S. intermodal rates increased for a second straight week in the week of Sept. 2, pulling the average up to a 90-day high, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The overall rate increased $14 this week and a total of $25 during the past two weeks to reach $2,034.

U.S. diesel prices climbed in the week of September 2, growing at an accelerated pace when compared to increases in the past two weeks, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

North American intermodal volume for the week ending Aug. 17 increased 3.6 percent year-over-year, according to the Association of American Railroads. This was the seventh straight yearly increase, and volume reached its highest level in 46 weeks.

There were 143 40-foot containers available to handle U.S. exports in Minneapolis in the week of Aug. 21, the third straight week with FEU availability following 11 straight weeks of deficits, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly Ocean Shipping Container Availability Report.

U.S. diesel prices edged up slightly in the week of August 19, following a two-week decline, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

U.S. intermodal volume for the week ending Aug. 10 saw a 6.1 percent increase year-over-year , according to the Association of American Railroads. In two weeks, the growth has accelerated by almost 4 percentage points from 2.4 percent growth in the week of July 27.

Westbound U.S. intermodal rates dropped once again in the week of August 12, putting the average at its lowest since the week of June 17, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. Despite this drop, the composite index remained mostly flat, down only 69 cents to $2,017.

Genesee & Wyoming, a major owner of short line and regional railroads in North America with significant operations in Australia as well, saw more positive results in July, with its traffic increasing month-to-month, year-over-year, and pro forma from volume before the Rail America acquisition. Its 2013 numbers, when compared to 2012, show extremely large increases because of its acquisition of RailAmerica. However, July 2013’s volume still was higher than the combined total of G&W and RailAmerica’s separate numbers for July 2012 by 8.8 percent.

U.S. diesel prices slipped for a second straight week, down 0.3 percent, in the week of August 12, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Prices fell in all regions of the United States.
