PORTLAND, Ore., and ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- April 5, 2010 -- Con-way Multimodal, a division of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that it has joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, an innovative collaboration between U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.

Con-way Multimodal will pursue activities that support the Partnership’s goal to reduce 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012 by improving the environmental performance of U.S. freight operations. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog.

“Participating in the SmartWay initiative supports our commitment to environmental sustainability -- we know that’s important to our customers and it’s a priority for us,” said Tyler Ellison, president, Con-way Multimodal.
“SmartWay also provides tools for consistently tracking progress toward specific goals, which will help us maintain focus on our efforts. We look forward to many benefits from our participation in this important program.”

Launched in February 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial strategies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies. The Partnership currently has over 2,200 Partners.

Under EPA’s program, SmartWay trucking and logistics companies commit to measuring and improving the efficiency of their freight operations using the EPA-developed F.L.E.E.T. (Fleet Logistics Energy and Environmental Tracking) Performance Model. Carriers and logistics companies must agree to improve their performance within three years and must also sign the SmartWay Transport Partnership Agreement.
