Antwerp Port Authority is organising the first Rail Freight Conference in Antwerp, to be held on Thursday, 11 February in Hangar 26. With 14 speakers and 12 stands this will be the largest rail conference in the Benelux since the deregulation of the rail market. The Rail Freight Conference will be opened by the president of Antwerp Port Authority Marc Van Peel, while secretary of state for transport Etienne Schouppe will conclude the event.

Participants at the conference include big-name carriers such as Hupac, DB Schenker Rail, Crossrail and NMBS Logistics. These will all have their own stand offering information about their transport activities and capabilities. There is also a programme of speakers who will deal with among other things best practices, the range of services available in the port of Antwerp and the future of rail transport in Europe.

Antwerp is the second-largest rail port in Europe, after Hamburg. Within the Antwerp port area there is more than 1,055 km of rail track, and each terminal has its own rail connection. Every day there are 250 goods trains to and from the port of Antwerp. Large-scale projects currently under way to provide even better access and permit further growth in rail transport include the Liefkenshoek tunnel, raising the capacity of the ring track around the port and a second rail access for the port.More information on the Rail Freight Conference can be found on the website www.portofantwerp.com/railfreightconference.
