Universal Truckload Profit Jumps 24 Percent

Universal Truckload Services reported a profit Thursday of $3.6 million for the 13 weeks ended March 3, up 24.1 percent from $2.9 million for the 13 weeks ended April 2 of last year.

Universal’s operating revenue for the period increased by 11.6 percent year-over-year to $175.8 million, including fuel surcharges of $22.1 million.

Truckload revenue for the 13-week period increased by 7 percent to $104.1 million from $97.3 million in the corresponding period of 2011. Included in truckload revenue for period is $1.3 million of revenue from an acquisition completed in the first quarter of 2011.

"Our revenue growth in the first quarter of 2012 was driven by an increase in the number of loads we hauled and in our average operating revenue per loaded mile compared to the first quarter of 2011,” said Don Cochran, president and CEO of the Warren, Mi-based trucking and truck-brokering company.
