Shipments carried by the on-hire freight transportation industry were unchanged in July from June, according to the Transportation Department’s Freight Transportation Services Index.
The Freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted index measuring month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton miles. The index covers for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight.
For the first seven months of 2011, the index was up 1.3 percent. The 108.3 readings in June and July were the second-highest since August 2008. Shipments have risen in eight of the last 15 months.
Freight shipments rose 3.8 percent from July 2010 to July 2011 but remain below the 109.9 level of July 2008 (109.9) and the record July reading of 110.9 in 2005.
