Arlington, VA - The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) applauded action by the United States and the eight other TPP countries today to invite Canada to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). The announcement from USTR comes a day after the announcement that Mexico has also been invited to join the TPP. Stephanie Lester, vice president of international trade issued the following statement.

“We are delighted to see that Canada has accepted the invitation to join the TPP negotiations. We welcome Canada’s constructive participation in the negotiations to establish a high-standard TPP that promotes trade and investment in all sectors.

“The invitations to expand TPP’s membership to Canada and Mexico are a positive step forward to establish the TPP as a living agreement. TPP expansion to include our NAFTA partners provides an excellent opportunity to modernize the trade rules to better reflect the commercial realities of today’s global value chains and to make American job creators more globally competitive. RILA also encourages TPP negotiators to continue their good work to conclude a robust TPP agreement as soon as possible.”
