US House Votes Against EU Aviation Emissions Tax

The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved legislation to ensure the U.S. will not participate in a European Union plan to tax American and other nations’ aircraft operators and air carriers for emissions when flying into or out of the EU.

The bill, H.R. 2594, the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act of 2011, now goes to the president for his signature.

“This bill is a firm response by the United States Congress that this nation will not allow U.S. jobs and our aviation industry to be threatened by the EU’s unilaterally imposed and unlawful tax scheme,” said Rep. John L. Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
