The Antwerp Port Authority has joined a consortium to operate a new rail freight terminal across the border of the Netherlands.
The Belgian port said its participation in the $20 million terminal in Geleen will help boost rail’s share in its overall modal split and attract more cargo from the southern Netherlands.
Construction of the terminal is due to start in mid-2012 and it is expected to start operations in April 2013.
The other members of the consortium are Belgium’s Ewals Intermodal, which operates train services to Germany, Switzerland and Italy, and Dutch trucker Meulenberg, which transports ocean containers between the southern Netherlands and Germany and the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
