Inland Ports

Inland Ports

Inland ports are specialized locations developed to serve the intermodal transportation network. Ordinarily located along railroad lines, inland ports offer intermodal transfer facilities and frequently international trade processing and other services. They may be linked to specific seaports. Distribution centers and other warehousing are generally collocated with inland ports, even on site.

The Inland Ports section offers news, analysis and videos about inland ports and warehousing strategies. For additional content that may be of interest, visit the JOC’s Industrial Real Estate and Distribution Centers sections.

The current state of the sector and the selection and use of inland ports as part of a distribution strategy are on the agenda at the JOC’s inaugural Inland Distribution Conference in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 18-19, 2013. Learn more about the conference.

Commentary

The latest trend in transportation, the latest competitive tool, is a port not on the coast and not on the water either. No water — an inland port … a dry port.
