BNSF Railway’s long-delayed plan to build a $250 million intermodal facility in the Kansas City area came a step closer to this month after an appeals court upheld a ruling permitting the facility.
Hillsdale Environmental Loss Protection, a nonprofit organization, failed to contest the Army Corps of Engineers’ environmental analysis that led to the permitting of the Gardner, Kan., project. The facility, which is under construction, is expected open in the third quarter.
The railroad needs build the terminal on the 1,000-acre site because its current Kanas City area facility, the Argentine Yard, can’t handle volume moving through the market, nor is there room for it to expand, according to a filing by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. The project will also include a $500 million logistics parks adjacent to the intermodal terminal.
