In the week ending Jan. 12, U.S. intermodal volume rose 10.4 percent year-over-year to 252,896 trailers and containers, according to the Association of American Railroads. It was the first weekly increase in 2013.
Intermodal plunged 14 percent year-over-year in the last week of 2012, and dropped 8 percent in the first week of 2013.
Carload volume in the third week ending Jan. 12 dropped 6.4 percent year-over-year to 279,893 carloads. Weekly carload traffic fell 3.6 percent on eastern railroads and 8.1 percent on western railroads compared with last year.
Canadian intermodal volume increased 7.8 percent to 53,908 trailers and containers for the week, and Mexican intermodal volume rose 6.1 percent to 9,355 trailers and containers.
