Mediterranean Shipping Co. has reworked its South America East Coast Service String 1, and the Port of Virginia will be the first call on the U.S. East Coast.
The 4,500- to 5,000-TEU vessels in the service then will call at New York, Baltimore and Savannah, then Freeport, Bahamas, before returning to South America.
Rodney Oliver, the Virginia Port Authority’s interim executive director, said the new rotation will let the port capture import cargo, and the service’s calls at three Caribbean ports offer new business opportunities.
