Agreement Clears Way for Charleston Intermodal Railyard

The South Carolina Budget and Control Board has approved an agreement among the South Carolina Department of Commerce, its Division of Public Railways and the City of North Charleston to permit the building of an intermodal railyard on the former Charleston Naval Base to enhance rail access to the Port of Charleston.

S.C. Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt and North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey negotiated the deal. Once a consent order has been entered, all pending litigation involving the parties, as well as the South Carolina Ports Authority, will end.

The agreement will make possible an intermodal container transfer facility that allows equal access to Class I rail carriers CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway.
