The Port of Liverpool has added six straddle carriers to its container-handling fleet.
The port has purchased one Liebherr and five Terex (Noell) diesel-electric straddle carriers, which Peel Ports Mersey Engineering Manager Brad Crumbleholme said can stack three containers in height (one over two). The Liebherr unit also provides extendable twin-lift spreader capability. Crumbleholme said the new straddle carriers offer improved fuel efficiency, reduce noise and lower hydraulic fluid requirements.
The U.K. port has undertaken a broad investment and expansion program, with planned capital maintenance spending of £20 million (approximately $32.2 million) in 2012. In addition, it is investing $483.2 million in a planned deep-water container terminal, Liverpool 2, that is expected to be operational in 2015.
