Logue Named President of FedEx Freight

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story
FedEx Express executive to take wheel of $4.6 billion trucking unit

William J. Logue, a veteran FedEx Express executive, will become president of FedEx Freight, the express giant’s $4.6 billion trucking arm, Dec. 1.

He will succeed Douglas G. Duncan, who has been president and CEO of the company since it was founded in 2001. Duncan will retire Feb. 28 and hand Logue the CEO title.

Logue joined FedEx in 1989 when the Memphis-based transport giant acquired Flying Tiger Line, where he held positions in sales and operations management.

As executive vice president and COO of FedEx Express-United States, Logue is responsible for FedEx Express air operations, air ground and freight services, central support and domestic ground operations.

As the new chief at FedEx Freight, Logue will oversee the second largest trucking operation in the United States: two less-than-truckload units, FedEx Freight and FedEx National LTL, as well as expedited transportation unit FedEx Custom Critical.

Like its competitors, FedEx Freight has struggled this year with overcapacity and heavy rate discounting in the LTL market. In its latest quarter, revenue fell 27 percent year-over-year to $982 million and operating income plunged 98 percent to $2 million.

However, the carrier’s average shipments per day improved from the previous quarter, the second consecutive quarterly increase. Many analysts took that as a sign the market and the company’s fortunes were stabilizing.
