The port of Rotterdam said container traffic with Russia surged 40 percent in 2010 from the previous year, sharply narrowing the gap with Hamburg, the market leader in Baltic feeder traffic.
Rotterdam estimated shipments to and from Russia totaled around 405,000 20-foot equivalent units last year compared with 283,000 TEUs in 2009 and 405,000 TEUs in 2008.

Hamburg handled 450,000 TEUs of Russian traffic in 2010, compared with 329,000 TEUs in 2009 and 725,000 TEUs in 2008, according Port of Rotterdam CEO Hans Smits.
The gap between Rotterdam and Hamburg has shrunk to 10 percent compared with 40 to 50 percent a few years ago, Smits told a meeting of 70 managers of Russian companies.
