Maersk Line is extending its program to cut sulfur emissions on its services to New Zealand.
The Danish carrier said Tuesday it will switch from using bunker fuel to low-sulfur fuel when it calls at all nine ports on its service schedule in New Zealand.
The switch reduces sulfur emissions into the air by 80-95 percent while ships are in port.
Maersk Line said the switch is part of its sustainability strategy to reduce SOx emissions significantly with a drive towards zero.
The shipping line has committed itself to implementing fuel switch programs in at least 10 global locations by 2015.
Maersk Line started voluntarily switching to low-sulfur fuels in California in 2006, and has steadily extended the program to other regions, including ports in Texas, Hong Kong and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
