Global freight volume remains below pre-recession levels in the U.S. and Europe, but is showing strength in developing economies, according to a survey by the Paris-based Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development.
Seaborne imports in tons last year remained 3 percent below pre-recession levels in the U.S. and 5 percent below pre-crisis levels in the EU-27 nations, the OECD’s international Transport Forum said.
Seaborne exports to the BRIC nations of Brazil, Russia, India and China rose last year and were 58 percent above pre-recession levels for the U.S. and 68 percent above pre-recession levels for Europe.
International air freight trade, considered a leading indicator, slowed during the fourth quarter of 2011, the survey said.
