Hamburg Sud, Alianca to Drop Chassis in Baltimore

Hamburg Sud North America and Hamburg Sud subsidiary Alianca plan to stop providing chassis to shippers moving cargo with merchant's haulage through Baltimore-area terminals and depots as of May 1.

They said Wednesday that shippers, their agents or consignees will need to procure equipment directly from the Metro Pool or other chassis providers of their own choosing. Intermodal moves by the two carriers will not be affected by this change.

Baltimore is the second port where Hamburg Sud has stopped providing chassis. They stopped providing cassis in Philadelphia-area terminals as of Feb. 1.

The move is part of an industry-wide trend among carriers to eliminate providing chassis at ports and rail terminals nationwide.
