Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Sud will add an eighth container vessel to their Indian Ocean Service linking ports in the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Europe.
The weekly IOS is a vessel-sharing agreement between Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Sud. The container ships range in capacity from 5,500 to 5,900 20-foot-equivalent units.
"The investment of an extra ship is being undertaken in response to port congestion, schedule reliability, emission reduction and a strong desire to ensure a reliable fixed-day weekly service," Hapag-Lloyd said.
The IOS port rotation, following a recent reshuffle because of berthing window adjustments, will be Hamburg, Antwerp, Tilbury, Tangier, Cagliari, Jeddah, Jebel Ali, Karachi, Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru), Mundra, Jeddah, Cagliari and back to Hamburg.
The change will take effect with the departure of the vessel Tessa from Hamburg on Aug. 31.
