The Coast Guard today declared a safety zone for a five-mile stretch of the Mississippi River near Caruthersville, Mo.
The agency said that it took the measure from preventing vessel wakes from overtopping a flood wall that protects the city. The restriction started at noon.
The Coast Guard said that no vessel will be allowed to transit the river between mile markers 844 and 849 without authorization. The safety zone will be in effect until May 14.
