Heavy-Haul Operator Buys Flatbed Trucker

Trucking and logistics operator Walden Smokey Point is expanding flatbed operations by acquiring E.W. Wylie Trucking of West Fargo, N.D.

The acquisition brings hundreds of drivers and new business to Walden Smokey Point, which operates Smokey Point Distributing, a heavy-haul specialist. Terms of the deal, facilitated by Transport Capital Partners, were not disclosed.

E.W. Wylie will operate as a separate company. “Smokey Point and Wylie will work together to better serve all customers,” said Don R. Daseke, Walden’s CEO.

Founded in 1938, E.W. Wylie has more than 150 trucks. It has terminals in Tyler, Texas and Denver. The company hauls fabricated steel, agriculture machinery, tubing, construction equipment, as well as oil gas industry components. Wylie also specializes in oversized, overweight shipments and wind energy equipment.

Smokey Point Distributing handles large, irregular and difficult to transport cargo and aerospace parts, as well as consolidated LTL shipments and truckload cargo.

The Arlington, Wash.-based carrier has terminals in Pomona, Calif., Wichita, Kan., and Charleston, S.C. Its parent company has headquarters in Dallas. Walden purchased Wylie from Otter Tail, a Fargo, N.D.-based industrial holding company that is realigning its portfolio of businesses.
