Green Container International Aid Donates 5 Shipping Containers to the Hostos Dream Project- Dominican Republic's first school ever to be built from recyclable materials and Sustainable Practices

New York, N.Y. (January 5, 2012) – Hostos Dream Project (HDP) will open the first school built from recyclable materials in the Dominican Republic in September 2012. Green Container International Aid, has donated 5 20' foot shipping containers, which will provide the basis for construction.

The primary mission of the Hostos Dream Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is to develop a dynamic school environment for children ages 4 to 18 in the Dominican Republic. It seeks to improve the quality of education by creating an environment that addresses the needs of all learners, especially those with autism and other special needs. The design and construction of the school will put a special emphasis on environmental conservation, creative thinking, problem solving and global, multilingual, citizenship. This model, once implemented, can be replicated in other areas of Latin America.

The Hostos Dream Project aims to develop a successful, green, sustainable school model that can be built and replicated in under-served school communities within the Dominican Republic, starting in the city of Higuey. Hostos Dream Project schools will be constructed out of discarded shipping containers and other recyclable/reusable materials, utilizing solar energy for electricity and green roofs to control heat. These sustainable practices will be combined with state-of-the-art classrooms, a library, a media/technology center, and labs. Both international and Dominican teachers, counselors and administrators, will provide the students of the Hostos Dream Project schools with an innovative, inclusive, sustainable education.

Arturo Oujo, of TAO Architects and Richard Moreta, licensed architect in the Dominican Republic, are in charge of the construction design and implementation, slated to prepare to break ground in early 2012.
