The Department of Transportation is making $1.5 million available to Alabama in “quick-release” emergency funds, to reimburse the state for some initial repairs to traffic signals, road signs and other roadway damage from the deadly April 27 tornadoes.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the early funding as he toured the damage zone in that state.
The DOT said costs to fix road facilities and remove debris are expected to hit $10 million, as Alabama continues to assess damage and make repairs. Meanwhile, LaHood said this initial road funding “will help the state restore its roads and bridges.”
The money comes from an emergency relief program of the Federal Highway Administration, and helps states clean up and rebuild structures damaged in disasters. It is separate from aid disbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has awarded more than $49 million to Alabama storm survivors for housing assistance and other needs.
