Barge Loses 22 Containers Off Miami Coast

Crews work at Port Everglades to remove collapsed containers still on board the Atlantic Trader.

Containers that fell off of a U.S. Navy contract barge bound for Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, no longer present a seafaring hazard, The Miami Herald reported.

Five of the 22 containers that sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean contained hazardous materials.

The tugboat Spence was towing the 91-foot-long Atlantic Trader from Jacksonville, Fla., when the mishap occurred 18 miles east of Key Biscayne, off the coast of Miami, the Coast Guard said to a Miami Herald reporter.
