CBS News is reporting the Transportation Security Administration is investigating allegations that Activair, an air cargo subsidiary of third-party logistics operator OHL, forwarded freight shipments onto passenger airlines without properly screening them.
OHL told the network it is “cooperating fully” with the investigation and in the meantime has voluntarily removed its Indianapolis facility from the TSA Certified Cargo Screening Facility program.
“OHL thought suspending CCSF in Indianapolis was an appropriate, prudent and proactive procedure to undertake until further TSA conversations and OHL internal fact finding is complete,” Kara Brown, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee-based company told CBS.
That facility is one of several hundred the TSA has certified as secure sites capable of shipping goods on passenger aircraft without additional screening.
Since August 2010, federal law has required that 100 percent of cargo shipped in the U.S. on passenger be screened. Forwarders, shippers and some independent companies have gone through a TSA auditing process to have facilities certified as screening sites and the TSA says it follows up that initial approval with periodic site investigations.
