Frankfurt-Hahn airport’s cargo traffic surged 25 percent in 2011 from a year ago, as export shipments at the German airport skyrocketed to an all-time high.
The increase, to 286,416 metric tons, contrasted with a 2.8 percent decline to 2.17 million tons at neighboring Frankfurt-Main airport, where night flights have been banned since November.
Including trucked airfreight, Hahn’s total traffic jumped 21 percent to 565,344 tons, well above the average for German airports, according to airport statistics. Hahn, a major hub for all-cargo operations, handles Russia’s Aeroflot, Qatar Airways, Abu Dhabi’s Etihad and Air Cargo Germany.
Munich airport boosted its cargo by 4.2 percent to a record 286,201 tons from 274,729 tons in 2010, when traffic soared over 27 percent from 2009.
