President Obama today signed into law the bill S. 1956, the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act of 2011, signifying to the European Union that the imposition of a unilateral tax scheme on the U.S. civil aviation industry will not be tolerated.
The bill, which requires U.S. airlines be excluded from an EU carbon emissions tax on all airlines flying into and out of EU airports, was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Nov. 13. A coalition letter signed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and 17 affected groups was also submitted to the administration, warning of the economic dangers of such a scheme.
The EU recently delayed enforcement of the tax, but only until October 2013.
