Los Angeles-Long Beach Container Volumes Edge Up

The Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex in 2012 eked out a 1 percent gain over 2011 in container volume, to achieve a total of about 14.1 million 20-foot-equivalent units, according to statistics released Tuesday by the two ports. The numbers include loaded import and export containers as well as empties.

December was a down month for Los Angeles, with imports declining 6.8 percent from December 2011, exports down 16.5 percent and total container volume, including empties, down 9.4 percent.

Long Beach has not yet released its December numbers, but Long Beach has been trending upward in recent months because some carriers that had been calling in Los Angeles, including Mediterranean Shipping Co. and CMA CGM, shifted some of their calls to Long Beach.
