APM Terminals and its French consortium partners, Bollore Africa Logistics and Bouygues, have been named preferred bidders to operate a second container terminal in the port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire.
The successful bidders will invest around $590 million during the 21-year concession for the TC2 terminal, which is due to open in 2016.
With a depth of 16 meters and 1,000 meters of quay, the new terminal will be able to handle ships up to 8,000 20-foot-equivalent units.
Abidjan is one of West Africa’s busiest container ports and a key regional transhipment hub with a throughput of 600,000 TEUs in 2012.
APM, the port arm of Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk, is the largest container terminal operator in West Africa ,with nine facilities in Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo and Angola.
