June was the busiest month of the year so far at the Port of Long Beach, with the 555,359 20-foot containers handled at the port easily beating the second highest total of 497,892 TEUs handled in May.
June was the busiest month of 2012 for loaded import containers and empty containers. Loaded export containers shipped through Long Beach in June were second only to the volume of exports handled in March.
On a year-over-year basis, June’s imports were up 3.47 percent from June 2011. Exports were 5.58 percent higher and the total cargo volume, including empties, was 0.2 percent higher than in June 2011.
Long Beach, the nation’s second largest container port, was down 5 percent in the first six months of the year compared to the first half of 2011. The drop in overall container traffic was due to the loss of several services that had been operating at the port last year.
