Ports Promote LNG as Marine Fuel

Focusing on the use of liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel, an “LNG Fuelled Vessels Working Group” has been established with support from the International Association of Ports and Harbors’ World Ports Climate Initiative.

The working group aims to develop guidelines on safe procedures for LNG bunkering operations, providing ports worldwide with an implementation guideline if they wish to pursue this technology.

The Port of Antwerp in Belgium is chairing this initiative. Active participants include representatives from the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Bremen/Bremerhaven, Brunsbüttel, and Hamburg, Germany; Le Havre, France; Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif.; Stockholm, Sweden; and Zeebrugge, Belgium.
