In July 2013 ZIM has officially joined The Clean Cargo Working Group, a global shipping industry initiative dedicated to improving the environmental performance of marine container transport through measurement, evaluation, and reporting. The Clean Cargo Working Group works to set industry standards and guidelines for carriers and customers. Today, CCWG tools represent the industry standard for measuring and reporting ocean carriers’ environmental performance on carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions.

ZIM has always maintained the highest industry standards with regard to CO2 emissions as well as other issues related to sustainability and the environment. ZIM’s performance data in certain aspects is above and beyond the officially required standards as determined by international treaties. One example is the fuel used by ZIM vessels, which already complies since 2011 with the sulfur levels demands which will become a mandatory requirement only in 2014.

ZIM’s fleet-wide CO2 emissions performance results already testify to ZIM’s efforts in this respect, and joining the CCWG will allow for better monitoring and transparency. Upon joining the CCWG ZIM acknowledges its commitment to the environment and its long-standing policy of a responsible and far-sighted approach to protecting the seas and the planet.
