Gleason & The Green

There'll be no St. Patrick's Day parade of containers in and out of the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Port terminals will be closed on March 17. The occasion: Teddy Gleason's birthday, a holiday under the local International Longshormen's Association contract.

Gleason, who died in 1992, was the ILA's president from 1963 to 1987. His actual birthday was not March 17 but was Nov. 8, which used to be a holiday under the ILA contract.

Since the 1983 contract, however, Gleason's birthday has been observed jointly with St. Patrick's Day -- appropriate, since Gleason once was grand marshal of the annual St. Patrick's Day parade in New York, as was his son Thomas W. Gleason, a labor lawyer whose firm has represented the ILA for years.
