China is on track to produce more corn than rough rice for the first time in history, according to the U.S. Grains Council.
In its December World Agricultural Supply & Demand Estimate, the U.S. Department of Agriculture revised its projection of Chinese corn production from 200 million metric tons to 208 million metric tons. They also estimate that Chinese rough rice production will be slightly more than 204 million metric tons.
China’s growing middle class and demand for a protein-rich diet have spurred the increase, the U.S. Grains Council said in a written statement.
