Lufthansa Cargo Shifts Asian Hub

Krasnoyarsk, Russia stopover to save 2,000 tons of fuel per year

Lufthansa Cargo will shift its technical stopover point for Asian flights. Lufthansa will make the first new stop June 1 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia instead of Astana, Kazakhstan on its flight from Tokyo to Frankfurt.

As flights to and from China go through Siberia, the move is expected to save 12 minutes per flight and more than 2,000 tons of jet fuel per year. Freight destined for Astana will be transported aboard Lufthansa Passage. Lufthansa Cargo will also continue flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan.

“With the relocation of our operations, we are realizing a long-planned optimization of the routing”, said Carsten Spohr, chairman of the executive board of Lufthansa Cargo.

After August, Lufthansa Cargo will use the new hub in Krasnoyarsk with 22 weekly flights to and from Europe.
