Unknowing Shippers

Unknowing Shippers

With the recent cargo security disaster of Charles McKinley shipping himself through the air cargo network, you have to ask yourself is the known-shipper initiative really working? And why is it such a secret?

As a freight management software developer, we intended early on to include the known-shipper requirements into our software. But initial attempts to obtain information from the Transportation Security Administration led us to believe that maybe the known-shipper initiative is a secret that no one is supposed to know about.

All contact with the TSA on this initiative has gone unanswered. Phone calls and e-mails have fallen on deaf ears. The TSA website contains almost no information about the known-shipper requirements.

So if the TSA wants the known-shipper initiative to have a positive impact on cargo security, why are they making it so difficult to obtain information about it?
