UNASSUMING AUTOMOBILE

he job was to pick the Car of the Century. The jury consisted of 133 automotive journalists from around the world. And the choices were vast in make, in style, and in the purpose for which they were designed and built.

There was the Porsche 911 sports car. The Willys Jeep that hauled soldiers throughout World War II. The elegant Packard Twelve from the 1930s. The stylistically striking 1959 Cadillac Eldorado. The posh Rolls Royce Silver Ghost of the World War I era.But the judges didn't go for glitz or power. They went for substance. The top choice? The Ford Model-T.

''It introduced the division-of-labor assembly-line concept, and it made automobiles affordable to the masses,'' Reuters quoted Robert Lutz, event master of ceremonies and former Chrysler president, as saying.

No. 2, incidentally - scoring 617 points, as compared with the Model T's 742 - was the British Mini, introduced in 1959, another car for ordinary people.
