Werner Enterprises’s First Quarter Profit Shrinks

Werner Enterprises reported a net income of $17.5 million for the first quarter of 2013, a decline of 18 percent from $21.2 million for first quarter 2012.

Quarterly revenue fell 1 percent from $498.4 million in 2012 to $492.9 million in 2013. Trucking revenue, net of fuel surcharge, decreased 2 percent year-over-year to $313.4 million, while value-added services revenue increased 6 percent year-over-year to $82.5 million. Average revenue per total mile, net of fuel surcharge, rose 1.3 percent in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the first quarter of 2012.

First quarter freight demand followed typical seasonal patterns and was similar to the first quarter of 2012, the transportation and logistics company said in a written statement. However, the Omaha, Neb.-based company said it experienced more severe winter weather in the first quarter of 2013 compared toh the same period last year, which had a “modest” negative impact on truck productivity and caused operated expenses in the quarter to be “somewhat higher.”
