Pitt Ohio Express has partnered with Winnipeg, Manitoba-based TransX to provide service to and from all points in Canada. The Pittsburgh-based regional LTL company says the joint service simplifies customs paperwork and speeds shipments across the border, using a single freight bill invoice to make payments simpler. Pitt Ohio''s customs clearance agents can help shippers with customs brokerage or put a shipment in a bond warehouse, if needed, to ensure compliance with customs regulations. The TransX Group, founded in 1957, is an asset-based, nonunion company with LTL, truckload, perishable, flatbed and logistics units.

The Internal Revenue Service changed the way it allows for dollar limits on depreciation deductions for passenger automobiles, but the regulations also affect some taxpayers who use vans and light trucks in their businesses. The new IRS provisions provide that a truck or van is not subject to depreciation allowance limits if it is a "qualified nonpersonal use vehicle" as defined by the IRS. The action was taken after the funeral services industry requested amendments to the definition of such qualified nonpersonal use vehicles in temporary regulations previously issued by the IRS. The order is Treasury Department 9133, amending IRS 26 CFR, Part 1.

The National Tank Truck Carriers published the third edition of its Cargo Tank Maintenance Manual. The revised edition includes all changes resulting from DOT Docket HM213 and all regulatory changes through June 2004. The manual will be available on CD-ROM and in print. The manual was developed to help cargo tank maintenance facilities comply with 49CFR Part 180 and other federal regulations governing the testing, inspection and repair of cargo tanks, and for training purposes. Separate sections cover all DOT400 and MC300 specification cargo tanks and "non-spec" food grade, hot-product, and dry bulk tanks. Printable test and inspection forms are included for all tanks. It also includes over 90 DOT "interpretations" and "guidance documents" to help shops comply with regulations. The new edition of the NTTC Cargo Tank Maintenance Manual is available for $375 for NTTC members and $450 for nonmembers. For more information, call NTTC at 703/838-1960 or visit www.tanktruck.org.
