HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE

BEGINS TRUCK HEARINGS

WASHINGTON - A House transportation subcommittee will hold the first of three oversight hearings today on a range of trucking and shipper issues.

The oversight hearings are being held by the House Public Works and Transportation Committee's Subcommittee on Surface Transportation. They are expected to examine the following:

* Problems with intrastate truck regulation.

* Overweight shipping containers.

* The dispute over bankrupt trucking companies' retroactively canceling discounts that weren't properly registered at the Interstate Commerce

Commission, and then billing customers years later for the difference.

Among those scheduled to appear today before the subcommittee are the five ICC commissioners, the National Industrial Transportation League and creditors of bankrupt trucking companies.

The subcommittee also has scheduled hearings for March 31 and April 2.
