NORTH AMERICAN BUYING

NEW TRACTORS, TRAILERSFORT WAYNE, Ind. - North American Van Lines is acquiring 30 new tractors and 900 new 53-foot trailers for $31.5 million.

The new equipment represents a 25 percent replacement of NAVL's tractor fleet and 20 percent of its trailer fleet, said Joseph Ruffalo, the company's president.

The new trucks will be operated by drivers belonging to Comtrans, a subsidiary of NAVL's Commercial Transport Division, Mr. Ruffalo said. Comtrans employs about 1,250 company drivers and has 725 owner-operators.

BN AMERICA TO OFFER

CHICAGO-SALT LAKE RUN

FORT WORTH - BN America, the domestic container network of Burlington Northern Railroad, will begin offering service between Chicago and Salt Lake City on May 15.

The corridor is the fifth BN America has opened since BN inaugurated its domestic container service. BN America is marketed through shippers' agents.

JAMES RIVER AWARD

CINCINNATI - Oakland, Calif.-based American President Distribution Services, a domestic freight subsidiary of American President Cos., said it was awarded "Third Party Carrier of the Year" by the Midwest region of James River Corp.

The award was given based on a survey of 21 James River manufacturing plants in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa and parts of Canada.

James River is a Richmond, Va.-based paper products manufacturer.
