TNT Post prepared to reduce number of compulsory redundancies
Amsterdam, 14 October 2010 - In talks held today, TNT Post provided the trade unions with a comprehensive response to the letter sent by the unions on 7 September 2010. TNT Post submitted proposals that met the request made by the unions for reducing the number of compulsory redundancies of 4500.
In their letter, the unions recognise that TNT Post is forced to start making considerable cost savings. The proposals made by the unions for reducing the number of compulsory redundancies have been evaluated by TNT Post. TNT Post is prepared to meet the unions on important points in order to reduce the number of compulsory redundancies of 4500. The exact result will depend on consultations with the works council which are already underway. During these consultations, details of the reorganisation plans are being discussed. The works council has the right to be consulted on these matters.
TNT Post expects to be able to round off the talks with the works council in the near future and is prepared to amend elements of its plans so as to lower the number of compulsory redundancies. However, these measures will not be able to avert compulsory redundancies altogether.
During consultations, TNT Post emphasised that, given the scale and impact of the reorganisation, it will exercise the greatest care in consulting with the works council. This does not affect the fact that the chosen path is fixed and that the implementation of changes is unavoidable, however painful this may be for the large group of employees who have loyally served the company for many years and who are still actively delivering mail to the right address every day.
The changes to the Postal Act and in the mail market did not arrive overnight. TNT Post has been consulting with the works council and the unions for many years regarding the changes in the mail market and the consequences of these changes for its employees. Given the increasing reduction in volumes and the unrelenting pressure on prices as a result of substitution and competition, TNT Post believes that we now must stride ahead.
TNT Post’s aim is to clarify matters for all of our employees this month and to do so in consultation with both the unions and the works council.
The Master Plan savings already announced totalling € 430 million for the period 2010-2017 remain unchanged.
