TERMS AND ISSUES

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's government reforms appear to be focusing far more on him than the nation's economy.

The Constitutional Assembly, dominated by Chavez supporters, voted last week that the new constitution should allow a president to serve a six-year term and seek immediate re-election instead of being effectively limited to a single five-year term. It could mean Chavez will spend at least another decade in power.Meanwhile, however, recession continues to wrack Venezuela. Unless that issue is addressed, it may not matter how many terms Chavez is allowed to serve.
