CHONGQING, CHINA, 7 SEPTEMBER, 2010 – Global container shipping and logistics Group NOL dedicated its new Global Service Center in this western China metropolis today.

Underscoring the international significance of the event, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Chongqing Mayor Huang Qifan helped commemorate the opening of NOL’s largest office outside of its Singapore headquarters. Prime Minister Lee, attended the opening ceremony with his wife, Madam Ho Ching.

NOL began operating at its Chongqing facility in February in two eight-story office towers at the New North Zone High-Tech Industrial Park near the city’s main airport. Known as the APL Global Service Center, has hired more than 600 people during 2010, mostly graduates from Chongqing area universities.

The center processes trade documentation and performs other functions for NOL’s two principal businesses: container shipping line APL and supply chain services provider APL Logistics. It serves the company’s offices and customers throughout the world.

“We’re grateful to the Prime Minister, the Chongqing officials, and all of the other guests who have helped us dedicate the Global Service Center,” said NOL Group CEO Ron Widdows. “By gathering here today, we send a signal that Chongqing and the Chinese interior are becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s trade economy.”

The CEO said NOL will name one of the next new vessels added to its fleet the APL Chongqing to honor the relationship between the city and his company. He added that NOL has made a CNY500,000 donation to the Yang Dian Village Primary School in a remote area of Chongqing. The funds will be used to finance reconstruction of the facility.

NOL considered a number of cities in China for the Global Service Center, the CEO said. Chongqing was chosen for its deep labor pool, welcoming business climate and cost-effective office inventory.

NOL has 46 offices and more than 1,800 employees throughout China with a regional headquarters in Shanghai. It said that it expects to add positions in Chongqing over time.
