SHELL TO BUILD MTBE PLANT IN ILLINOIS

Shell Oil Co. said it will build its third plant to make the chemical additive, methyl tertiary butyl, at its Wood River, Ill., complex. Start-up of the plant is expected in 1994.

Plans for construction of similar units at Shell's Deer Park, Texas, and Norco, La., plants were announced in December. Start-up at those plants is expected by late 1993.The three MTBE plants will have a combined capacity of 15,000 barrels a day. MTBE is blended into gasoline to reduce carbon monoxide emissions.

The Clean Air Act mandates oxygenated gasoline by the fall of 1992 for about 40 major U.S. cities.
